A Dream on the Water: Our Sailboat Elopement Styled Shoot in New Bern, North Carolina
I had a dream — a dream of photographing a sailboat elopement. I’ve seen other photographers do them before, but something in me knew I needed to create one of my own. I’ve always felt drawn to the water — the calm of it, the rhythm, the soft palette of coastal blues and whites that feel like home to my heart. There’s something about the North Carolina coast that has a way of stealing your breath and giving it back softer.
So, I put the word out. I told a few vendor friends that I was dreaming up a coastal North Carolina sailboat elopement and wanted to make it happen. One of them — my sweet friend and incredible creative @happiestmobilebartender — told me she’d keep her eyes open.
A few weeks went by, and then one afternoon I got a message from her on Instagram: “I found your sailboat.”
The Beginning of a Coastal Dream
Within five minutes of that message, my phone rang. It was Captain Don from Upwind Acres Sailing Charter, calling from New Bern, North Carolina. His voice was full of energy and warmth as he said, “I heard you’re looking for a sailboat for a styled shoot.”
I couldn’t say yes fast enough.
Before I even hung up the phone, I knew this was going to be something special. We immediately started planning the details — the date, the look, the vendors — and I reached out to some of my best vendor friends to bring it all to life.

When the Weather Changes Course
If you’ve ever planned anything near the coast, you know the weather likes to keep you on your toes. Just two days before our shoot, Captain Don called me again and said, “The weather will be much better tomorrow instead of Sunday — do you think everyone’s flexible?”
Cue me frantically texting every vendor, model, and creative involved.
Within minutes, everyone said yes. We shifted everything 24 hours ahead — hair, makeup, travel, timelines — and I couldn’t believe how beautifully everyone adapted. That’s the magic of working with passionate creatives; when the goal is to make something beautiful, you just make it happen.
Sailing into New Bern, NC
The next morning, we packed up our gear, bouquets, and charcuterie boards, and made the three-hour drive to New Bern, North Carolina — a coastal gem nestled where the Neuse and Trent Rivers meet.
If you’ve never been, New Bern is a dream for couples wanting something a little different from the usual Wilmington or Outer Banks (OBX) scene. It’s quiet and charming, filled with history and sailboats and the kind of light that photographers like me lose our minds over.
When we arrived at the dock, we finally met Captain Don and Co-Captain Alicia in person. And when I say their hospitality was out of this world, I mean it.
Aboard the Upwind Acres Sailing Charter
They greeted us with the warmest smiles and a freshly cleaned sailboat that looked like something out of a travel magazine. There was cold wine, champagne, sparkling water, soda, and a charcuterie board that Alicia had put together herself. Everything about the moment felt thoughtful and welcoming — like we were old friends instead of new ones.
The boat rocked gently as the tide rolled in, the sky a watercolor wash of blues and golds. The soft sea breeze tangled in the bride’s hair as she stepped aboard in her Robert Bullock Bride gown from Shiloh Court Bridal — the gown stunning everyone in the vicinity. Jaws dropped on every person we past.
As photographers, we couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect setting.
The Shoot: Light, Movement, and Love
The Upwind Acres sailboat glided through the water as we captured every detail — the curve of the sail, the dress against the sunlight, the way the bouquet from Volpert Floral Co mirrored the ocean’s colors in soft blues, ivory, and green.
Our models, Cheyenne and Hunter, played the part of an eloping couple perfectly — their laughter carried on the wind, their hands brushing as they leaned against the deck rail, their faces glowing in the late afternoon light.
There was this moment — the kind that makes you fall in love with your job all over again — where the sails filled with wind and the sun hit the water just right. The light danced across their faces and I thought, this is it. This is why I do what I do.
